Character Questionnaire

1. How does your character think of their father? What do they hate and love about him? What influence - literal or imagined - did the father have?
His biological father is currently unknown. Considering all that Allen knows about his parents is that they abandoned him- they can go screw themselves for all he cares. They are definitely a source of ill will for him.

His "adoptive" father was Mana Walker. Allen loved a lot about Mana. He loved that he was kind and very natural when talking with kids. He always had a very easy temperament. On the not so great side, it's indicated that Mana was not mentally healthy- he was suffering from something akin to untreated schizophrenia. So sometimes it would make his behavior become rather erratic. He'd forget important things, get strange ideas, have illogical emotional responses to situations and sometimes not be cautious about his own safety. I'd imagine that there'd be good and bad days with Mana, as with a lot of mental illnesses. There were good days, but it was not the ideal parent situation that Allen liked to paint it as. It especially didn't help that Allen at the time knew nothing of the war and Mana's past, so it must've been even harder for Allen to tell which behaviors were rooted in something very real, and which were not.

This influenced Allen in a lot of ways! The most obvious is the mask of Mana's behaviors that Allen started wearing to cope with Mana's death. After the trauma, Allen had a mental breakdown and the only way he could make himself recover is by attempting to mimic Mana's mannerisms and speech patterns. This is why he speaks as polite as he does. But the downside of it, is no matter how well Allen wears it- a mask is a mask, and that definitely puts an unintentional wall between him and other people. And there's also the whole problem that Allen and Mana's core personalities only have so much in common - so it's not a perfectly fitting mask and it does cause some conflict within Allen about himself. In Drift Fleet, he's gotten a lot better at accepting that he's a different person from Mana and that's fine- but he still has his moments.

The not so obious ways that Mana influenced him was his willingness to travel, and the whole being dead broke all his life sure helped foster Allen's money love (Though Cross's influence definitely amplified it). Not only that, but his tendency to try to mother-hen adults would've definitely come from having to look after Mana on his not-so-good days. And I'd say some of Allen's weird sense of humor came from his dad- but alas Allen is nowhere near as funny as his dad actually was.

2. Their mother? How do they think of her? What do they hate? Love? What influence - literal or imagined - did the mother have?
His biological mother is currently unknown. Considering all that Allen knows about his parents is that they abandoned him- they can go screw themselves for all he cares. They are definitely a source of ill will for him.

His "adoptive" mother was Teresa of the Faint Smile (or just Teresa). He met Teresa in Paradisa when he was about 16 or so, and she ended up taking him under her wing. Teresa was brave, strong and affectionate - all traits that he deeply admired about her. Up until he met Teresa, there wasn't much in the way of older female influences in Allen's life- so she was able to have her unique place in his heart and his schema for family.

Her influences on Allen weren't numerous as Mana since she didn't meet him until he was nearly grown, but she still left her mark. She helped him learn be a better swordsmen, and he borrowed some of her style in terms of yoma-sensing to help him be more precise with his own sensing capabilities. Along with that, he adopted some of her physical gestures and personality quirks. If he ever pokes or flicks someone in the forehead? Yeah, that's all Teresa's doing.

3. Brothers, sisters? Who do they like? Why? What do they despise about their siblings?
Allen was an only child, so nothing to say here!

4. What type of discipline was your character subjected to at home? Strict? Lenient?
I would say it was more lenient than anything. He never really had much in the way of bedtimes or restrictions. There were things that all his parental figures scolded him about, but there's no real set parenting routine that any of his parents really showed.

5. Were they overprotected as a child? Sheltered?
Ha...ha...ha...

I wouldn't say he was sheltered except for stuff regarding the war and his connection to the Noah- that stuff was hidden from him until well into his teen years. Other topics though, they didn't really shy away from.

As for being overprotected. Well....Teresa was definitely of the mindset that if anyone hurt someone she considered her kid, she'd murder them. She even did this for Clare, but it never really came up with Allen.

Mana, however, never said he'd go to that extreme. Instead he just went ahead and did it without Allen's knowledge. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

6. Did they feel rejection or affection as a child?
He felt both, with unfortunately rejection being the stronger of the two experiences. His parents abandoning him and his time as a slave very much scarred his emotional outlook that set the tone for how he interacts with people. Mana helped by showing him affection as a parent, but unfortunately Mana's unstable mental state did not mean it was a consistent source of affection. This affected Allen in that he has walls up around a lot of people because he expects them to reject him- but if someone manages to get him to feel emotionally invested? Well, he sort of clings in his own way because he badly craves affection and unconditional love, and frets easily if something changes in the amount of love and affection he receives from a person- which in come cases, can lead to a downward spiral of trouble.

7. What was the economic status of their family?
Extremely poor. With Mana he was always just scrapping by, and with Cross they were always deep in debt. It's very much the reason why he's a bit fixated on money as an adult.

8. How does your character feel about religion?
Allen is a Catholic, he converted when he was a preteen. He feels religion is a very powerful thing that can help people get through their dark times. He is a very firm believer in the existence of God and that He is the ultimate power. He is absolutely confident about this and hell will freeze over before you convince him otherwise.

However, he is not very much an orthodox Christian. Allen's pretty terrible at following orders, so of course just following the Bible for the sake of following the Bible would not pan out very well with him. He also has severe issues with how the church is run in his world (and Lord for good reasons). He also doesn't really mind if someone's a different faith from him, so long as they don't get in his face about it. Even if he disagrees with a particular belief system (like say a polytheism one), he's traveled and experienced enough to know it's best just to keep his mouth shut about it.

9. What about political beliefs?
He honestly couldn't give a flying fuck about politics. Just don't be a dick to your people and he's cool with you.

10. Is your character street-smart, book-smart, intelligent, intellectual, slow-witted?
Allen is actually very intelligent! This is the kid that went from completely illiterate to capable of being fully literate in two languages within the span of a couple years- and this was in-between traveling and working. He also taught himself how to cheat at cards with incredible skill and basically found ways to survive and thrive in hellish situations that would've taken down most people. Had life been kinder to him, he probably would have excelled in school.

Unfortunately, there's the undeniable setback that Allen didn't go to school. Allen never had a stable childhood that would've given him a foundation for basic education. Therefore he tends to lack in a lot of knowledge that many of us take for granted. This often can make him seem much stupider to people who don't know the context of his life.

Fortunately for Allen, his intelligence is finally being used thanks to the studying medicine. This was something he started in Paradisa and has continued in the fleet. This is no easy task, as he not only has to learn the insane amount of information you need to be a doctor, but catch up on on all the basic education he missed during his childhood - all while relying only on books and different doctors he's come across that were willing to teach him due to not having access to any schools where he is. And oh yeah, let's no forget he's originally from 1898, so on top of everything else he's had at least 118 years worth of knowledge, slang and technology to catch up on. Which not only has he not had a nervous breakdown from this enormous amount of information, but he's managed to stay on top of it and keep up with his fight training and learn stuff about space to understand his boyfriend better.

In other words, yeah. He's smart.

11. How do they see themselves: as smart, as intelligent, uneducated?
Buuut he still sees himself as an uneducated idiot.

12. How does their education and intelligence – or lack thereof - reflect in their speech pattern, vocabulary, and pronunciations?
It's definitely limited his vocabulary for awhile, but that's rapidly improved ever since House in Paradisa forced him to study a dictionary- cover to cover. As for the way he pronouciates things...he generally doesn't have trouble since he's good at languages, except that he stumbles over words that definitely aren't made for his accent (British) - aka some American slang, foreign words.

13. Did they like school? Teachers? Schoolmates?
He didn't go to school! Other than Paradisa week long plots, he's never had any official schooling. The closest he had was homeschooling and mentoring from various people. His views of his teachers range from very positive to.........very very complicated.

14. Were they involved at school? Sports? Clubs? Debate? Were they unconnected?
N/A

15. Did they graduate? High-School? College? Do they have a PHD? A GED?
Allen has zero degrees or diplomas. The closest he has is he earned his title as an Exorcist after completing his apprenticeship- but that doesn't really come with a certificate. It's actually a point of trouble for him in medics since he has a lot of training and experience, but he doesn't have the paperwork to back it up, whoops.

16. What does your character do for a living? How do they see their profession? What do they like about it? Dislike?
First and foremost, Allen is an Exorcist. Technically it's not a living since you don't paid, but all his expenses would be paid for by the church when he was with the Order. Being an Exorcist is...basically everything to Allen. He loves it, he takes a lot of pride in it. Not so fond of the mass amount of death that Exorcist work tends to deal with- but hey! Every job has its downside. He resonates so strongly with the title of Exorcist that even though he's left the Order and hasn't been in his homeworld for about 8 years, he still identifies as one and does what he can to fulfill Exorcist duties in the fleet - aka assisting in keeping the fleet and visiting planets safe from demons and undead. It...doesn't keep him very busy in the fleet.

His other occupation is that he's a medic! He fell into learning medicine in Paradisa when he was about 21 or so, after a series of terrible incidents that made him kinda rethink his life and choices. He decided that while he still wanted to help people, only helping them by fighting was not exactly helpful. So he decided to go into medicine since Paradisa was almost always short on medics. Which...he absolutely loves the job. It's high stress, there's so much to catch up on and it's not glamorous- but he loves it. He loves being able to help people and just how busy it can keep you. His love for the occupation has only grown since coming to the fleet since there's even more work that needs to be done and he loves feeling needed, even if it means he's knee-deep in toxic sludge on field days.

...Yeah. He's a weirdo.

17. Did they travel? Where? Why? When?
Allen's traveled all his life! The longest he ever settled anywhere was Paradisa for seven years, and even then he'd take trips every so often. It's a major reason he's able to thrive in the fleet as well as he does, because he's very used to traveling place to place.

18. What did they find abroad, and what did they remember?
Considering he's always been abroad- everything. Everything he knows, he found. There we go.

19. What were your character's deepest disillusions? In life? What are they now?
Finding out about being the 14th's host and the levels of terrible the Order were willing to go were definitely his biggest disillusions. Honestly, it's been years and it's still a bit of a sore spot for him, so I'll go with those. I mean, it's hard to top "my dad possibly never loved me" and "the people I work for are kinda evil".

20. What were the most deeply impressive political or social, national or international, events that they experienced?
He was part of the Black Order, an international group funded by the Vatican in order to fight the Earl. That was pretty impressive, but did not work out. Then in Paradisa, there was the Peace Patrol that attempted to serve as a police force in the castle, but was highly ineffective due to a number of reasons. Both of these have kinda left him with a very cynical view regarding authority and political groups.

21. What are your character's manners like? What is their type of hero? Whom do they hate?
Allen is a gentleman! He tries hard to be polite, but it's mostly kind of a mimicking of his father's behaviors than anything. Still, most of the time he comes off as pretty polite.

His type of hero are people who go through a lot just to help other people. People who are dashing and brave and selfless. He is an absolute fan of Robin Hood.

The type of people he hates are people who use and hurt others simply for their own benefit. Acting that way immediately get you on Allen's shit list.
